The radio was our co-pilot when my dad and I made our 45-minute daily commute. My future took shape as we listened to NPR and the BBC on our trips between our home in the foothills town of Evergreen and Denver. Although at the time I would have preferred listening to Radio Disney, I began to appreciate the education and enlightenment I experienced on our daily drives.
As I grew older, I realized there were gaps in media coverage about marginalized communities. After graduating from university, I created a publication that uniquely covered community-based news. At Ms. Mayhem, we reported from the intersection of race, class, gender, sexuality and ability—telling these stories for the community rather than about them.
