Candidates in several city government positions have more work ahead for them over the next month. Six races, including the mayoral contest, are expected to head into runoff elections on June 4 as of press time. Polls closed on the May 7 municipal election day at 7 p.m. A surge of late voters bumped turnout above levels in 2015, with about 33% of ballots returned. Election officials said it’s likely they would be tallying votes late into the night. About half of all ballots arrived on Election Day, according to elections spokesperson Alton Dillard.

On April 30, four of the six candidates for Denver mayor had their last debate a week from election day.

Those hoping to gain some form of relief from high rent prices in Denver may soon be rejoicing. After years of rapidly escalating rents, Denver tenants are starting to catch a break. Although the housing market started off hot in the beginning of 2018, rent prices began to decline in the last two fiscal quarters of the year.

After 15 months of negotiations and three days of striking, the Denver Classroom Teachers Association and Denver Public Schools have reached a historic agreement.

Denver teachers were up early on the morning of Feb. 11 like any other school day, but most were not headed to their classrooms. Most were prepared to make their voices heard despite the cold weather and go on strike for the first time in 25 years.

A week after the Denver Public School district’s request for state intervention in negotiations, close to 700 teachers, students and parents marched to the district’s central administration office.

Although Denver teachers did not begin their strike on Monday as previously planned, tensions between the Denver Classroom Teachers Association and the Denver Public School district are running high.

The partial shutdown of the United States federal government has crawled into its fifth week, with little hope for an end in sight.
